Joyful Giving

Imagine if one raindrop became many. All the raindrops would make an ocean.

For the founders of Western Construction and Citimark, two Richmond-based companies, their dream is for everyone to become a raindrop – each person giving back to the community, however they can – so everyone can help make an ocean of a difference.

Known for their strong community roots and philanthropy, Thomas and Magdalen Leung,President and Vice-President plus founders of Western Construction, along with Nelson Chan, President and Founder of Citimark, are long-time friends and business partners. Together, they’ve helped raise funds to equip Richmond Hospital with important technologies and medical equipment, improve patient care services, and upgrade facilities.

Nelson met Thomas and Magdalen in 1986 – one year after he immigrated to Richmond with his family. Nelson and Thomas then worked on a Richmond townhouse project together as their first joint partnership. Fastforward 30 plus years later, they continue to be steadfast friends and their two Richmondbased real estate development companies have partnered on many more projects.

As the founders’ personal and business roots in the Richmond community grew, Thomas, Magdalen, and Nelson joined forces to support Richmond Hospital Foundation. A loyal donor and supporter of Richmond Hospital Foundation since the early 1990s, Magdalen enthusiastically served on its board for many years. Together, they became a joint gold sponsor for golf in 2015 and continue to support the annual golf tournament to this day.

By 2017, the two families made their own commitment to donate a philanthropic gift to the Foundation in support of building the Yurkovich Family Pavilion, the new Richmond Hospital acute care tower that will be home to a new emergency department, fully equipped medical imaging centre, expanded surgical centre, single-occupancy inpatient rooms and much more.

What began as a new relationship between two young companies in Richmond in the 1980s blossomed into a heartfelt partnership to help create joyful living for everyone in the community through joyful giving.

“We’ve lived, worked and built communities in Richmond for more than 35 years,” explains Nelson. “Richmond Hospital is our hospital, and we want to do what we can to support our health care workers in providing much-needed and excellent compassionate care for our community in a first-class, expanded facility.”

“When you see the smile on someone’s face, or when they tell you how thankful they are for your support in bettering lives, it is worth it,” adds Magdalen. “There are many different opportunities to help build a better and healthier Richmond. Together, we can foster many raindrops and make a difference in other’s lives.”
