Hugh Mooney's Story  -

Hugh’s Story

My name is Hugh Mooney, and the excellent care at Richmond Hospital is the reason that I’m alive and well today.

I can’t say enough about the expertise of the nurses and doctors – and how lucky we are in our community to have world-class care right here for us in Richmond.

Today, I want to tell you about what I went through, because I hope my personal story inspires you to give joyfully and impact the lives of countless people.

I know you recognize how important it is to give our medical teams at Richmond Hospital the resources required to continue providing leading-edge care to our loved ones. Your generous gift will do just that.

I’m not the first person in my family to benefit from extraordinary expertise at Richmond Hospital.

My wife, Sandra, actually underwent several lifesaving operations. We count ourselves lucky for those experiences. But little did I know what would happen next …

I don’t go to the doctor very often, mainly for routine prescription refills. However, my doctor recommended I go for my first colonoscopy. I could have put it off, but it was lucky I listened to my doctor that day – very lucky.

You see, the colonoscopy showed that something wasn’t right. I was shocked when further testing revealed a tumour in my colon. My life was on the line and that tumour needed to be removed.

No one wants to learn they need an operation. It’s a scary thought. That’s why I believe we’re so fortunate in this community… because we can be assured that we’re in the best of hands when we are coping with life’s most frightening moments.

I hate to think of what could have happened if I hadn’t received such great care so quickly. Instead, my operation was a success.

But things didn’t end there.

In the post-surgery stage, my stomach began to swell, I was vomiting uncontrollably and was required to have a tube placed in my throat. I continued to fight for my life. You see,
I required high-level care in the ICU with antibiotics, insulin injections and medications to reduce my racing heart rate and my blood sugar.

The staff at Richmond Hospital were determined to get me through it.

During my entire time in the compassionate care of Richmond Hospital’s nurses, they diligently watched for any signs of deterioration. My doctors were equally vigilant.

Their care and expertise paid off…

Within about two months of the operation, I was able to go on a cruise to Norway that I had planned in advance and was looking forward to. That’s something I’m very grateful for today.

I’m also very grateful for people like you, because you’re helping to inspire a healthier future for Richmond.

As a long-time Richmond resident, I’ve seen a lot of change, including the incredible growth in the community. As our population continues to expand, we can work together to ensure our hospital has the resources it needs to continue offering excellent care.

So please take a moment today to show your support. It comes down to neighbours helping neighbours. Through giving joyfully, we live joyfully.

Thank you. Together, we are building a healthier community.

Sincerely,
Hugh Mooney
Grateful patient
