Barbara’s Story

My name is Barbara. It’s hard to believe, but I have lived in Richmond over 80 years! My goodness, the city has certainly grown and changed in my lifetime. I’m writing to you today as a long-time supporter of Richmond Hospital Foundation and as someone who has been a patient at Richmond Hospital several times as well.

Around 1962, my relationship with the hospital began. As a young woman, I was looking for a way to give back and I was passionate about health care. I began to volunteer for the hospital and started raising money for the hospital 3 years before it opened.

In those days, our fundraisers were fashion shows, dances, networking events—anything to support and raise awareness for the hospital. It was a lot of fun. I also started the hospital thrift shop in 1974 and later served on Richmond Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors.

“The hospital I’ve supported for so long now supports my husband and I when we need medical care—and to be honest, that’s quite often at our age!” – Barbara

As I’ve grown older, I feel my investment of time and service has been paid back ten-fold. The hospital I’ve supported for so long now supports my husband and I when we need medical care—and to be honest, that’s quite often at our age!

Over the years, my husband and I have had a lot more medical needs than we did when we were younger. My husband has been in and out of the hospital frequently, due to a chronic infection. He also had a pacemaker put in several years ago. I’ve had a couple of minor operations, including gall bladder surgery.

It’s impossible to know when any one of us might need health care services but, thankfully, Richmond Hospital is here for us when that time comes. We have been very, very grateful for all the doctors, staff and nurses at the hospital for their compassionate care – their kindness, expertise, and most of all their knowledge. It is abundantly clear that they always have our best interests in mind.

Our many experiences at Richmond Hospital have proven time and time again how fortunate we are to have the best in care close to home.

As I am now in my 80’s, my birthday wish is that you would join me in support of Richmond Hospital Foundation. Please help me carry on this tradition by giving your own gift today!

Sincerely,
Barbara Goodwin
Supporter of Richmond Hospital Foundation

P.S. Another special way of giving to Richmond Hospital Foundation is to leave a legacy in your name to support ongoing health care. Although I can no longer volunteer and fundraise much, I am in the process of setting up a legacy gift myself. I’ve been a part of Richmond Hospital Foundation for decades and I take comfort knowing that my support will forever live on. I want future generations to have the same excellent care that we do now.
