2023 Leadership Challenge

MOLLI Surgical System
The MOLLI Surgical System has revolutionized the way breast cancer patients experience treatment at Richmond Hospital. Unlike traditional methods that use wires, MOLLI utilizes cutting-edge magnetic technology to mark the breast and help guide surgeons in the precise removal of cancerous tissue, enhancing both efficiency and patient comfort.
Impact
- The implantation procedure of the MOLLI seed is swift with minimal pain, reducing patient discomfort and anxiety
- The MOLLI seed can remain in place for 30 days, eliminating the need for additional procedures closer to the surgery date and optimizing resource utilization and scheduling efficiency
- The equipment has significantly reduced surgical times, allowing for faster treatment of more patients
- With multiple surgeons utilizing the MOLLI daily, procedures are being conducted in a timely manner, enabling more patients to be accommodated

Orthopedic Table
The Hana Fracture Table has significantly improved Richmond’s operating room efficiency and patient recovery after orthopedic procedures such as hip replacements and fracture surgery. While traditional approaches involve cutting through muscles, the Hana Table is a patient positioning device that helps surgeons minimize tissue trauma.
Impact
- Surgeons can now perform frontal total hip replacement, a minimally invasive surgical technique known to reduce post-operational pain, enable an early recovery process, and lower the risk of surgical site infections and complications
- Radiolucent technology enables in-surgery x-ray imaging, which allows surgeons to confirm accurate and precise surgical placement instantly
- The Hana Table’s gentle positioning and support mechanisms enhance patient comfort and safety throughout surgery, contributing to a more positive patient experience
- Procedures that initially took 3-4 hours is now being done in less than 2 hours
- There is a significant shortening of hospital stays, increasing the number of patients that can go home the same day of surgery

Echocardiography Machine
The introduction of a new echocardiogram at Richmond Hospital has significantly expanded heart diagnostic services and access in Richmond. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound test used to diagnose various cardiac conditions such as heart failure, cardiomyopathy and valve disease.
Impact
- In November 2023, the wait for a routine outpatient echocardiogram exam was 285 days. With the new unit in place, the wait has been substantially decreased to 49
- The additional unit has helped treat an additional 7 to 8 people daily and expand the sonographer team to two full-time sonographers at Richmond Hospital
- The decreased wait times in the community is helping expedite diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
The new Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) machines have enabled safer and more patient-centred care for patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Richmond Hospital. CRRT machines function as artificial kidneys, administering continuous renal support in the event of kidney failure. It is used for clinically unstable ICU patients hospitalized with life-threatening infections and poisoning.
Impact
- The CRRT system discharges excess waste automatically, allowing the medical team to administer essential fluids, nutrition, antibiotics, and medications without concerns about fluid and waste accumulation that are present with traditional dialysis sessions
- This type of therapy is particularly beneficial for patients in intensive care units who cannot tolerate the rapid fluid and electrolyte shifts associated with intermittent dialysis
- The new machines also come equipped with Electronic Medical Record connectivity – crucial for online integration which enables reduced manual documentation and more time for patient care
