Hundreds of hopeful donors and hospital staff gathered at Richmond Hospital on Thursday, March 29, 2018 to hear an announcement from Premier John Horgan.   The news couldn’t have been better.  The Province has made a commitment to replace the original tower built in the 1960s.

“We are working to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community by moving forward with our partners to fund this redevelopment project.  The new Acute Care Tower will modernize Richmond Hospital for the coming decades, and bring quality public health care to people who live and work here,” said Premier Horgan.

“We’re committed to moving as quickly as we possibly can, and construction will certainly be underway before 2020,” Premier Horgan said at the event.

The Province has approved the concept plan, and the project will now move to the business planning stage.   The scope of the new facility and final budget stage is expected to take 12-18 months.

“This is what our donors and our community have been waiting for,” said Natalie Meixner, president and CEO, Richmond Hospital Foundation.  “This commitment from the Province shows that voices can be heard.  YOUR voices. Today’s news is re-energizing.  It’s a reflection of what’s possible in the community, and we are optimistic about reaching our campaign goals. We look forward to greater engagement with philanthropists in the community.”

Over the past couple of years, The Foundation has raised $27 million. Everyone from community organizations and associations to families and individuals have contributed.  Every philanthropist is committed to Richmond’s legacy for generations to come.  But The Foundation isn’t done yet.  “We are half way there!  It’s time to ACT NOW and take us to the finish line!” says Meixner.

“Richmond is blessed to have an incredible team of doctors, nurses and staff with outstanding expertise, and it’s important that they have the right space, equipment and facilities to support that,” said Mary Ackenhusen, president and CEO, Vancouver Coastal Health. “We expect the new tower will not only increase the level of service we provide, but support new, robust models of care that reflect the diverse needs of the community.”
